The brief

More Than a Coffee Shop

Iron Tiger Coffee Co. sits on the main road through Bramhope, just north of Leeds. Owner Hilly is turning it into the place local runners, cyclists and triathletes go before and after training. He also runs a triathlon club for people who take the sport seriously.

When Hilly refurbished the café, he needed a floor that looks warm and welcoming but can cope with trainers, cleats, wet kit and a steady flow of customers all day. We chose a glued-down herringbone LVT: the look of real oak, with the durability and easy cleaning a busy café needs.

Moda Flooring is proud to sponsor Hilly's triathlon club, and our logo is on the club kit.

How we did it

From Bare Subfloor to Finished Floor

Most of a good floor is in the prep. Nobody sees it once the planks are down, but it's why the finished floor stays flat, quiet and secure for years.

Café floor stripped back to the original subfloor before new flooring 01

The Starting Point

Once the café was stripped back, the old subfloor was worn and uneven. LVT shows every dip and bump under it, so the prep had to be right first.

Freshly poured flexible levelling screed across the café floor 02

Prime & Screed

We primed the whole subfloor with a grit primer, then poured a flexible levelling screed over the top for a smooth, flat finish right up to the counter and walls.

Uzin adhesive trowelled onto the screed beside newly laid herringbone LVT 03

Mark Out & Glue

We marked out the LVT so the herringbone ran square with the walls, then spread Uzin high-temperature adhesive one marked area at a time.

Plank by Plank

We laid the planks one at a time, building the herringbone across the room and cutting every side piece by hand to fit the walls, counter and doorways.
